Illiteracy is the greatest enemy of man.So to overcome all the adversity of life we need education.In a broader sense education is that factor which teaches us to be self dependent,skilled-logically and scientifically and capable of nuturing right values.But i’m afraid to say that our education system doesn’t commensurate with these things.Education is beyond marks,jobs, money.It is a never ending process that starts from the lap of our mother.It is a matter of shame that many of we nepalese think our education is over once we leave the university/college.The real thing what we forget is we learn knowingly or unknowingly every moment of our life.Beside that some of others limit education within grade,degree or the four walls of the classroom.If this concept is still prevailing in our country then how can our education system foster us the the habit fo clear and independent thinking?
It is not that we haven’t introduced any reform at all to make our education system relevant to the needs of the day.But what we lack is its implementation and thats the reason why our system is still remaining archaic and obsolete.We people must accept the gruesome reality that the quality of education in most of our education institution is abysmally low.Our education system is full of flaws and loophles which must be plugged immediately to stop further degradation and make the system relevant to the fast changing time.Education system should be amended from time to time,keeping in mind the interest of the students and the new happenings around the world.How can we remain aloof from the these things?To cope up with the present problems the education policy should be drastically changed.Beside that the text book and curriculum should be updated and modernised to face the challenge of 21st century.We people are still being stucked with the old curriculum of rote memorisation and hoping our graduates to be accepted in the job market.Shame on us!
As far as my knowledge goes the only reason why our post-graduates are unable to find suitable jobs for themselvesis that in our country a lot of unrequired stress is laid on bookish knowledge and theoretical aspects at the cost of providing any practical training to them.We people are taught right from the school level to mug our books and reproduce them verbatism in the exam without providing any room to ask how and why?What i want to say is parcatical knowledge and practical training are completely lacking in our system.We have a curriculum to memorise the histroy rather than alowing us to think and make a history.
It is not that on a way of modernising our system we kick at our culture and traditions instead of preserving them.But what we need to do is acknowledge the good features of the systems prevailing in other countries and include tehm in our own.I wonder why can’t we modernise our education system to meet the challenge of this new era?It is well known that every year lot of programme are held focusing to improve the education system.Beside that government pumps large fund for education in every budget(annual exercise that keeps government’al machinery running).But all in vain, such laudable scheme is taking our country nowhere rather than trodding down year after year with ragard to quality.I don’t hesitate to avoid that education system in Nepal has been an experimental area where mulitude of ideas have been tried ,tested and left floundering without fully reviewing their usefulness.The other thing which government needs to learn is that it shouldn’t spare in making the country self-reliant in education, it shouldn’t shut its doors to the winds of change in the education system of other countries and incorporating their merits in our own system.
In a nitshell,let the upcoming education system be able to make our student complete men and women who will be responsible citizens of Nepal and always ready to shoulder heavy responsibilites.Then, the future of Nepal shall certainly be bright and our youth will always brim with confidence however adverse the condition might be.Let the education not be a burden but a key to lead a prosperous life.Otherwise how on earth our education can be useful?I’m hopeful that the coming generation will be able to have such kind of education that helps them to make decision in every aspects of life.
